A research service based in Whitechapel, a fascinating area with a very rich - and sometimes macabre - history. Perhaps best known by Londoners today for its curry houses and artists' studios, it is of course notorious as the one-time hunting ground of Jack the Ripper. It's also been witness to Captain Kidd's execution, the Cable Street riots, the Sydney Street siege, the Elephant Man, and generations of French and Jewish immigrants who practised their silk-weaving trade in the sweatshops above Brick Lane... Some of my own ancestors - cockneys of Huguenot origin - also lived in the area.
Images exist of all these aspects of Whitechapel's rich history, as they do for other places, but tracking them down can be time-consuming and difficult.
The Genealogy service is dedicated to locating such images, and is especially aimed at family historians and other genealogists with an interest in visual records of their UK ancestry. The service specializes in UK locations, but searches may also be conducted internationally.
Types of images:
- Portraits - photographs/paintings of ancestors
