The Silk Road by Frances Wood Published in 2002 by The Folio Society and The British Library. The illustration of this book, which describes the famous Silk Route through Asia and the Arab world, was sheer pleasure to research. The lively and engrossing text is accompanied by modern and historical photographs of the magnificent landscapes and architecture, Oriental art, textiles and manuscripts. It includes photos of the fabulous wall paintings from the famous caves at Dunhuang, the thousand-year-old mummies from Urumqi with their extraordinarily well-preserved and brightly-coloured clothing, and the monumental statues of the Buddha in Afghanistan, recently destroyed under the Taliban regime. | |
